El Mundo has an exclusive interview with George W. Bush.
El Mundo leads with an exclusive interview with George W. Bush which the paper describes as his political will.
The paper headlines with ‘Freedom is a gift from God, whoever tries it, in Iraq or Palestine, will fight for it’.
Other quotes highlighted by El Mundo – ‘When they voted for Hamas in Gaza they were no choosing between war and peace, but reacting against the corruption of the previous leaders of Al Fatah’.
‘I admit that I acted against the principles of the free market when Paulson and Bernanke warned me that we could fall into a depression greater than the Great Depression’.
‘Praying is for me something very personal. Praying has sustained me, it has strengthened me. I am spiritual but not mystical. This means I do not hear voices’.
The paper links the interview to a photo of Bush with three ex Presidents and the President elect, Barack Obama.
El País has a similar photo and says that Obama has been listening to his predecessors, while ABC has a photo and captions ‘Banquet for historical memory in the White House’.
Público notes the Aznar comment on the Obama victory, describing it as ‘historically exotic’.
El País says that Washington is pushing for a cease fire in Gaza, and that Israel has accepted a proposal from Egypt.
ABC says that Israel has been intensifying its offensive ahead of talking peace in Egypt with Hamas.
Público headlines ‘Three hours of peace, 21 of death’ as a pause was given for humanitarian reasons yesterday.
El Mundo notes that Bernard Madoff sent jewelry through the post to family members to avoid it being embargoed.
The papers cover the gas war between Russia and the Ukraine with El Mundo saying that at least eight countries are affected and rationing their energy.
El País notes that Russia has cut the gas supply to Europe and the EU has given a 24 hour ultimatum to Moscow and Kiev. The paper says four countries will have no gas at all tomorrow if the crisis continues.
ABC headlines that Russia is challenging Europe with a cut in the gas supply in the middle of the cold spell. The paper says that Moscow and Kiev have turned to Brussels to verify their war on the transport of the fuel.
El País notes that the recession has led to another wave of job losses in the United States and Europe. It says the private sector lost 700,000 jobs in the States last month and that unemployment has increased in Germany for the first time in three years.
El País says that the Prime Minister wants to increase contacts with the Vatican, bypassing the Spanish Church. The paper says Zapatero future conflicts with the Spanish bishops can be avoided by the strategy, ahead of law changes on abortion for example.
ABC considers the P.P. leader Mariano Rajoy is doing an electoral marathon this year in his personal battle with Zapatero. He has said there is a ‘different alternative’ for voters in the Basque election.
Many papers have a photo of Sevilla footballer Kanouté who showed a vest supporting Palestine after scoring a goal last night. El Mundo has a photo.
El Mundo says that the Acciona company has made 1.7 billion in Plusvalías as Enel takes over Endesa. The paper says that BBVA and the Santander financed the operation.
The start of the big trial in Bilbao is well reported. El Mundo says that members of the PNV are setting up Ibarretxe so that he sits on the accused bench as a political victim.
El Periódico informs us that the first day of the sales in many parts of the country saw massive numbers of people chasing bargains of upto 70% off.
And finally,
El País reports that believers are now acting against the atheists following the bus advertising in Barcelona. We can all expect some evangelical adverts shortly it seems.
