There has been further criticism of real estate abuses seen in Spain coming from the European Parliamentary Petitions Commission, with the formal voting on their report in the European Parliament now expected for next month.
The regional Valencian Government is at the centre of the EU’s attention with the past LRAU law and the current LUV town planning laws criticised in particular. Europe wants to see judicial and administrative mechanisms put in place to compensate those who have become innocent victims of the two laws.
The report keeps the earlier suggestion that European Union aid to Spain be suspended in the case that the real estate problems are not solved, and has been opposed by both the Socialist and Partido Popular Euro deputies.
The text was drawn up by the Danish Green Euro M.P., Margarete Auken, and moves on for definitive approval in the European parliament after obtaining 23 votes in favour, 11 against and one abstention.
Proposed amendments to her report placed by both the PSOE and PP Spanish Euro MPs which toned down the accusations were rejected by the rest of the parliamentarians.
The Auken report is the third EU report about building in Spain and comes after reports in 2005 and 2007, all highly critical of building law in the country. The Valencia region is at the centre of them all.
