Penélope Cruz has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s ceremony in Los Angeles. It comes for her role in the Woody Allen film, ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’.
‘Has anyone ever fainted here?’, she said in her acceptance speech, ‘I could be the first’.
Her career began in 1992,with ‘Jamón Jamón’ by Bigas Luna where she starred opposite a young Javier Bardem who is now her partner, and then came the Oscar-winning film ‘Belle Epoque’ and a period working with Pedro Almodóvar. Penélope had words for Almodóvar, Bigas Luna, Trueba, her parents and the town of Alcobendas, and all the actors of Spain.
She told the press conference after the award that she could not believe it and that she had hidden away in a corridor for 15 minutes, crying and talking on the phone. She said the moment had been incredible.
Penélope Cruz wore a white Pierre Balmain dress from the sixties which she has owned for years. Jewellery was from Chopard.
