The economic slowdown and high unemployment is resulting in many immigrants opting to return home
Half of the estimated 30,000 Moroccans living in the Murcia region, the largest immigrant group, have already decided to return home because of the economic slowdown in Spain.
The estimation comes from the Association of Immigrant Moroccan Workers in Murcia, ATIME, who say the typical scenario is for the woman and children to return to Morocco, leaving the husband here alone in the search for a job. Few have taken up the government’s incentives to return home on a long-term basis.
ATIME says that work in the fields of Cartagena is all that remains for most Moroccans, where their labour is highly appreciated.
The association says that Ecuadorian immigrants are moving to other parts of Spain, such as Navarra and La Rioja following the construction slow down in Murcia.
