Found not guilty by jury of killing the men, a judge has now sentenced the accused to 20 years in prison for starting a fire
A man who was found not guilty by a jury of killing two homosexual men in Vigo in July 2006, will now spend 20 years in prison for having set fire to the house where his victims, Isaac P.T. and Julio A.L. lived.
The presiding judge in the Provincial Court in Pontevedra on Wednesday sentenced Jabobo Piñeiro Rial, who had confessed to the killings, to the 20 year term for setting the fire.
A jury had earlier found him in ‘legitimate defence’ regarding the killings, despite the fact that he inflicted 57 stab wounds, after he told the court that he suffered ‘an unbearable fear’ in their presence, and after one of the men had allegedly threatened him with sex at knifepoint.
On hearing that verdict from the jury the mother of one of the victims shouted ‘Releasing a confessed killer – I hope that stays on your conscience for the rest of your lives’.
The Chief Judge in Vigo, Juan Carlos Horro, also described that verdict as ‘scandalous’.
Accepting the jury’s earlier decision that Jacobo had acted ‘to defend himself from being raped or killed’, the judge however said today that the crime of setting the fire was indisputable, and handed down the 20 year term, considering the fire was also a threat to others who lived in the building. The defence are to appeal.
