Spanish Minister for Defence, Carme Chacón, has kept her word and changed the law so that transsexuals can be accepted in the armed forces in Spain.
The changes needed in medical admission procedures were approved on Monday, and became law when they were printed in the Official State Bulletin on Wednesday.
It removes a list of reasons that a person can be excluded which was drawn up in 1989 and includes the lack of a penis as such a reason.
The matter was recently highlighted by the case of Aitor G.R. a 29 year transsexual from Jaén who says it has been his life’s dream to enter the army, but who has been rejected on three occasions. He has welcomed the news but is now too old to be admitted under normal procedures and hopes an appeal to the Ministry of Defence will now be successful.
