The Mayor of La Muela, in Zaragoza, María Victoria Pinilla, from the Partido Aragonés, has been arrested along with 17 others and charged with corruption, bribery, influence peddling and money laundering.

Among those arrested are the Mayor’s husband, one of her children and businessmen from Zaragoza, Madrid and San Sebastián in a case which has been named ‘operación Molinos’, and which was opened after an individual complaint made two years ago.

Several searches have also been carried out, including the Mayor’s large villa on the outskirts of the town which is 23 kms from Zaragoza.

She had promoted the construction of 9,000 new homes in four sites in the town, despite opposition from the provincial real estate authorities and the regional government halting a development for a golf course and 2,000 homes.
The Town Hall is also alleged to have paid for trips to Cancún for many local residents.

More arrests have not been ruled out and some reports speak of at least another 20 people being implicated in the case.
