Spain to donate a million condoms to Africa

It comes a day after controversial comments from the Pope in Africa

Vatican advisors are trying to play down comments made by Pope Benedict XVI when he said that AIDS cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms ‘which even aggravate the problems’.

Activists and several governments have described the comment as counter-productive and even irresponsible, saying that condoms save lives, and in Spain the Government has now responded with the announcement that it would be donating a million condoms to Africa.

The Ministry for Health and Consumer Affairs said the million condoms would stop the expansion of HIV in Africa and help with the prevention of the infection.

A public tender is to be announced for the supply of the condoms shortly.
