The Málaga village of Colmenar, population 3,265, last year saw the registration of no less than 16,948 new vehicles, almost as many as Málaga city and three times the number in Marbella.
In fact the small municipality attracted 25% of registrations for hire company cars, according to the AEA, the Associated European Motorists Organisation.
The reason is simple, the village is one of the cheapest in Spain for the
impuesto de matriculación’, the registration tax on new vehicles, something which has not escaped the attention of hire car companies.
There are differences in the cost of the tax of some 365% across the country, with San Sebastián and Barcelona the most expensive and Ceuta, Melilla and Colmenar, among the cheapest.
However the boom is not continuing. Colmenar Mayor, Pedro Fernández, told La Opinión de Málaga, that so far this year not a single car had been registered there.
