It comes after an estimated 500,000 took to the streets of the country on SundayThe Spanish Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, has asked the people who demonstrated against the reform of the abortion law across Spain on Sunday why there have not been any similar protests during the 25 years the current legislation has been in force.
The Minister said that the future reforms had still not been finalised, but noted that the 22 week limit discussed had a wide consensus among experts as being the minimum viable time for a foetus. The new law would place a fixed limit into legislation for the first time, the current law has no such limit.
Aído spoke to the press on Monday after meetings with the Association of Accredited Clinics for the Interruption of Pregnancy ACAI, and the Spanish Contraception Society, as part of a round of contacts she started last week.
After talking of her respect for the opinions given on the subject she said that the organisers of the marches had not explained what aspects of the proposals they objected to.
Meanwhile Socialists spokesman José Blanco was blunter with his message, and asked why some only take out their placards when the Socialists are in Government when during the eight years of the PP administration half a million abortions were carried out with no single protest.
Blanco said the Government were set in moving the reform ahead, as the Ministry say it gives legal protection to both the mother and the medical professionals.
