A hailstorm which hit the north of the Cartagena district on Monday afternoon has, for some farmers, completely wiped out their crops. The Asaja farmers association puts losses for the potato and lettuce crops at 100%.
La Verdad newspaper said it affected around 400 farmers from Molinos Marfagones as far as El Algar, some 4,000 hectares in total.
A farmer in La Aparecida who had to take refuge under a motorway bridge, lost 10 hectares of lettuce to the hail, worth around 700,000 €. He described it to the newspaper as a catastrophe.
