The last statue of Francisco Franco to be on the public highway in Spain, showing a young Franco as Commander of the Legion in 1921 when he led the defence of Melilla, will remain where it is in the North African enclave, at least for a while more.
The statue can be seen at the entry to Melilla Port, and the President of Melilla, Juan José Imbroda, has said that is where it will stay until a decision can be made as to where to place it after it is removed. He says he wants the Ministry for Defence to find a new location for the piece, in a Military Museum or even in a barracks, but until a decision is made, the statue stays put.
Imborda said leaving the statue in place did not, in his opinion, break the Historical Memory Law.
