The Elysée Palace in Paris has officially denied that President Sarkozy ever said that that the Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is not intelligent.

It follows reports in the Liberation that he did so at a private lunch with some French parliamentarians. The paper claims he criticised both Zapatero and Merkel and said that Silvo Berlusconi was the example to follow.

Sarkozy is reported to have said that Zapatero had copied his initiative in cutting advertising from the state TV channel.
