The appearance of Francisco Camps before the Valencia High Court yesterday dominates the front pages today

El Mundo has a photo of the PP President of Valencia, Francisco Camps being greeted outside the High Court in the city where he declared in the Gürtel case yesterday.
The paper also has a photo of one of the businessmen implicated in the scandal, ‘el Bigotes’, Álvaro Pérez, whose moustache is as prominent as ever.
The paper headlines that Camps told the court that he paid for his suits in cash in the Forever Young shop in Madrid. He said he never used the Generalitat credit cards and the money had been given to him by his wife from the cash available in her pharmacy.
El Bigotes told the court that he had not purchased any clothes to give them to the President of the Valencia region.
El País highlights that Camps presented himself before the judge without any evidence that he had paid for the suits.
The paper says the invoices incorporated into the case summary indicate that bribery has taken place.
The paper shows Camps on his exit from the court surrounded by his deputy presidents, Gerado Camps, Juan Cotino and Vicente Rambla, and with the Mayor of Valencia Rita Barberá.
El País says that Camps continues indicted in the case after claiming that he paid for his clothes in cash. The paper says he did admit that El Bigotes gave him gifts.
ABC has a picture of Camps outside the court greeting some women and the caption ‘At last I have been able to tell the truth’. The paper gives no more details on its front page.
Público has a large front page photo of Camps outside the court with the headline ‘The happy indicted man’. The paper says that the Valencia President declared himself ‘very satisfied’ after declaring before the High Court for 45 minutes. Público notes that the judge has kept charges against him in the Gürtel case, and that groups of both supporters and detractors were outside the court building.

El Mundo reports that one of the terrorists who escaped after the Madrid train bombings, who rented the flat in Leganes which was eventually blown up as seven of his colleagues committed suicide, and who was thought to have been killed in Iraq, has now been arrested in Morocco. Mohamed Belhadj was handed over to Rabat by Syria.

El Mundo says that the impunity of ex Defence Minister, Federico Trillo, is ‘provoking irritation’ in the army. The paper says that soldiers are angry that no politician has been charged, but two officers who were only following orders have been condemned in the case of the wrongful identification of the bodies from the Yak 42 military plane crash.

El Mundo tells us that Cuba has expelled a CNI, Spanish intelligence services team, who were on the island investigating 20 ETA activists. The paper says they were ‘invited to leave’ the island.
ABC also gives prominence to the story and says there is upset in Cuba over the activities of the CNI.

El Mundo notes that hundreds of children were sexually abused for decades in Catholic Centres in Ireland.

El Mundo notes that the Sevilla judge has ‘changed his criteria’ and released the brother of the main accused in the Marta del Castillo case.

ABC notes that the Minister for Education is not happy about the new abortion law proposed by the Goverment and wants to see parents involved when a youngster wants to have an abortion.

El País informs us that the GDP in Spain has seen its worst reduction for the past 50 years. The Spanish economy has shrunk 3% in the 12 months to the end of March. El País notes that the government considers the worst is now past.
Público considers that the paralysis in consumer spending is sinking the Spanish economy and notes that the fall in industrial activity is greater than that seen in construction.

El Mundo tells us that Caja Madrid has stopped paying interest on two funds because of the bad debts on payments into them. The paper says that it is the first case of its type in Spain, and will only be reflected in the balance of bank which failed to commercialise the product.

ABC leads with the headline that the Government has opened the way to mergers between banks and savings banks, with the number two in the Economy Ministry calling for a restructuring of the financial system to get out of recession.

El País tells us that the Diamiel marshlands are to be filled with water artificially as the natural water table in the area has fallen dramatically.

El Mundo looks at the new Socialist campaign video for the European elections and considers that the PSOE has put its adversaries on the same level as the most extremist postures.

El País describes Norman Foster as ‘an architect for the new world’ following his naming as winner of this year’s Prince of Asturias award for the Arts.

And finally,
El País has a strange item on Spanish film and says that there are not enough cinemas to show all the new films which are waiting to be premiered. The paper notes that hundreds of films which have received government funding have not been seen.
