William Kikanae is in Spain to raise funds for an education programme in his village

A Masai chief was in Murcia on Wednesday as part of a fund-raising tour around Spain to help the people of his tribe. He’s hoping to raise enough money to fund what La Verdad newspaper describes as an ‘ambitious’ education programme for the children of his village.

With the help of the Caja Mediterráneo, he’s been giving a series of conferences to explain the Masai culture, which the paper says has remained almost unchanged for centuries. As William Kikanae explains, ‘we try to live from our cattle but, as we don’t farm, there are always certain things like vegetables, some medicines and school materials which we have to buy, and that doesn’t take into account our problems with water supply’.

He remembers having to walk up to 20 kms to school when he was a child and says he doesn’t want the tribe’s children to have the same problems, especially as many of the schools in Kenya are not free.

The Masai are concerned, Kikanae said, that many who leave the tribe to study will not return and will lose their culture.
