The Spanish Constitutional Court has overturned the sentence handed down by the Supeme Court which banned the candidate last of the new Basque party, Inciativa Internacionalista.

The Supreme Court considered that the group’s candidate list for the European elections had been ‘infiltrated’ by ETA-Batasuna supporters, basing its decision on the links that the group’s leader, the dramatist Alfonso Sastre, has with previous HB, EH and ANV groupings.

However the Constitutional Court has now ruled that there is not enough evidence to make that claim, and ordered that the II-SP candidates be allowed to stand.
