The Madrid regional government has decided to suspend classes at a secondary and primary school in Leganés until Wednesday
Classes have been suspended until Wednesday at the Isaac Albéniz secondary school in Leganés, Madrid, after the confirmation of two cases of the A (H1N1) virus and another forty under investigation. They are reported as a girl who had recently returned from New York and a younger brother who attends the nearby Pío Baroja primary school.
The girl returned to Madrid on 19th May and showed symptoms of the virus the day after, as did her younger brother. Speaking after a meeting of the Public Health Commission on Monday, Health Minister Trinidad Jiménez said protocols to prevent any spreading of the virus were activated that same day, and suspected cases were isolated at home from the 25th of the month. Concerns amongst parents led the Madrid education authority to take the decision however to close both centres on Monday afternoon.
The Minister previously recommended that the schools should remain open, with those suspected of being infected to remain at home. She later said she supported the decision by the Madrid regional government as a move to calm the fears of parents of children who attend both schools.
These new cases bring the total number of people infected with the virus in Spain up to 180; all are said to have minor symptoms and are responding well to treatment. One is a soldier in Extremadura who visited the Hoyo de Manzanares military academy in Madrid which recently suffered an outbreak of the Swine Flu virus. He is under treatment in hospital in Badajoz.
