José Antonio Barroso has been fined 6,500 Euro for the comments ruled as slanderous by the National Court
The National Court has found the Izquierda Unida Mayor of Puerto Real guilty of serious slander against the King of Spain for comments he made last year describing the monarch as ‘corrupt’, ‘weak’, and the ‘son of a drunk’.
The court said in its ruling on Tuesday that José Antonio Barroso’s words went beyond political criticism, deeming them a ‘personal insult’ and has fined the Mayor almost 6,500 €. The prosecutor in the case had asked for almost 11,000 €. El Mundo reports that the money must come from Barroso’s own pocket and cannot be paid from Town Hall funds.
Barroso made the comments during a speech he made to celebrate the anniversary of the Second Republic in Los Barrios, Cádiz, in April last year.
