The priest is reported to refuse the christening because, while the godfather is married, it was not by the Church
A parish priest in La Rioja is reported to have refused to christen two children because the godfather chosen by the family, their uncle, was not married by the Church. The priest is said to base his decision on Canon Law. José Manuel Salvador had a civil marriage in 2004, which he says is not an impediment to his acting as godfather. He told Europa Press he believes the real reason the priest has refused is because he is gay.
The previous priest in Cervera del Río Alhama also refused to perform the christening with José Manuel as the godfather, and, he says, told his mother that it was because her son was gay.
