A nephew by marriage to the Queen has been questioned in the case this week
There has been another arrest in the Unión corruption investigation on Lanzarote, where the ex Mayor of Yaiza, where the Town Hall building was searched by police last week, was arrested at his home on Thursday morning. José Francisco Reyes of the Lanzarote Nationalist Party was Mayor of Yaiza until his defeat in a motion of censure last year and is now an opposition councillor. He’s reported by ACN Press to be currently under 10-year public office ban for granting planning permission on rustic land and is a suspect in two other investigations for planning irregularities. He is said to have recently told the media that his only current source of income is his unemployment benefit.
His successor as Mayor, Gladys Acuña, of the PIL Independents, is also a suspect in Unión.
There’s also news that Enrique Pérez-Parrilla, the Socialist Mayor of Arrecife, was called in for Civil Guard questioning on the case on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday, a Lanzarote architect was questioned at the Unión Civil Guard operations centre set up in Costa Teguise. He’s named as Carlos Morales, the husband of Princess Alexia of Greece, making him a nephew by marriage to Queen Sofia. The architect’s office in Puerto Calero was reportedly searched on Monday last week.
The case is investigating alleged illegal commissions and has so far seen some 20 arrests.
