The quick election result service in Spain means that today’s papers have the data about yesterday’s vote in the EU poll
El Mundo headlines ‘Rajoy wins with clarity, but Zapatero does not collapse’. The paper highlights that the PP has doubled its lead over the PSOE in Madrid and the Valencia regions, while the Socialists resist in Andalucía although with a lead cut there from 18 to 8 points.
El Mundo notes that the UPyD party has managed to gain a seat for the first time, but has not managed to become the third force in politics as it had wanted.
El Mundo has a front page photo of the celebrations on the balcony of the PP headquarters in Calle Genova in Madrid It shows Rajoy, Mayor, De Cospedal, Aguirre and Del Castillo. The paper highlights the results with bar and pie charts.
El País headlines ‘The PP triumph chalks up a point for Rajoy’, and notes that the PP had a more than three point advantage over the Socialists – more than half a million votes. The paper considers the recession has punished the Socialists which lost nearly 5% with respect to 2004. El País has a photo of Mariano Rajoy and Jaime Mayor celebrating their triumph on the PP balcony in Madrid.
Público headlines it is the first national victory for Rajoy and describes it as a ‘harsh warning’ for Zapatero who lost more than half a million votes in Cataluña, Andalucía, Madrid and Valencia.
The paper considers that Rajoy has consolidated his leadership of the PP, beating the PSOE for the first time since 2000. Público notes that the IU left wingers and the nationalists held on to their seats, and Rosa Díez picked up one seat.
ABC has a front page photo of the celebrations on the PP balcony in Madrid and headlines that Rajoy beats Zapatero by 581,000 votes. The paper says the PP has beaten the PSOE for the second time in a year and thrashed the PSOE in Madrid, Valencia and Galicia. ABC notes the Socialists suffered setbacks in Cataluña and Andalucía.
La Vanguardia headlines ‘Warning to Zapatero’ and notes that the Catalan Socialist party won, but the three way pact has sunk somewhat in support.
El Mundo reports that the Socialists lost support in all the large European Countries, and that the European PP now has more than 100 seats more than the Socialists.
The paper notes that Sarkozy has had a good day against the French Socialists and the vote for Gordon Brown has collapsed in Britain.
El País notes that the turnout across Europe was the lowest in history, with a 56% record abstention. It says the right wing and Euro-sceptics have advanced in Europe thanks to the recession. It notes that Berlusconi won despite the scandals.
Público highlights the increase of the right wing in Europe and said it was success for Sarkozy and ‘The Tories’. It notes that Merkel won, although losing 6.7%, and says the new European Parliament has been born more fragmented and with more representation for the anti-Europeans and extremists. It also notes an increase in support for the Greens.
ABC considers that the centre-right has won in the large countries of the EU, and says that Berlusconi has a landslide in Italy, Merkel and Sarkozy consolidate their power in Germany and France, and Brown has witnessed the labour collapse in the United Kingdom.
La Vanguardia says that the European Parliament has taken a sharp turn to the right.
ABC notes that turnout was the lowest in the history of the EU.
El Periódico, published in Barcelona, headlines ‘A Europe in crisis hands itself to the right wing’. It notes the PP has
beaten the PSOE by nearly four points in Spain.
Some of the papers highlight some of the incidents during voting.
El Mundo notes that a college was closed in Naples so that Noemi Letizia, one of Berlusconi’s ‘young friends’ could vote.
In other news:
El País notes that the Brazilian Navy has recovered more bodies from flight 447. The paper says six have now been found and the investigation into the tragedy is now centred on the sensors which calculate the speed of the plane.
El Mundo reports that one of the forensic scientists who was evaluating domestic violence victims in Asturias, himself had two distancing orders against him for ‘abuse by phone’ against two women in other parts of Spain.
El País considers that Federer is now the ‘greatest in history’ after his win at Roland Garros yesterday, his 14th Grand Slam win. It’s the same number as Pete Sampras, but the United States player never won in Paris. The paper notes Nadal did not watch the match, but sent him a text message in congratulation.
And finally,
El Mundo reveals that Kaká will undergo a medical from a Real Madrid doctor in Brazil today. It comes as other papers report Silvio Burlosconi saying that nothing has yet been decided on the player, currently at Milan.
