Spain’s former Partido Popular Prime Minister has welcomed the results of the European elections and spoke on Monday of a ‘day of special happiness’ while addressing a meeting of Conservative Party and U.S. Republican Party supporters in Madrid.
Speaking at the meeting in FAES headquarters, the right wing think tank which he leads, José María Aznar spoke of his pleasure at the PP’s victory in Spain and the Tories in the UK, and said it was important to share the same vision on relations between the United States and Europe. He referred to an ‘Atlantic Europe’, based on a belief in traditional values and a free world’. ‘We are,’ he said, ‘in a world where we must discuss the ideas and values which we conservatives defend.’
Aznar was invited to address the meeting by Ben Harris of Conservatives Abroad and his colleague from Republicans Abroad, James Levy. Mr Harris congratulated the ex Prime Minister for his ‘leadership on defence and his commitment to peace’ and noted increased ties between Spain, the UK and the US during his time as Spain’s Prime Minister. James Levy spoke of his arrival in Spain in the early 90s, during what he described as the ‘scandals’ of the time, and referred to the situation of changing from black to white when Aznar came into power. José María Aznar led the Partido Popular to victory in the 1996 general election, and remained Prime Minister until the Socialist victory in 2004.
Libertad Digital reports that the former UK Cabinet member, Michael Portillo, has accepted the position of honorary patron of the foundation of British conservatives in Spain.
