The first grants will be paid out this coming school year at 600 Euro a monthThe Junta de Andalucía is hoping to encourage teenagers to stay on for further education after the age of 16 with a new grant which will be paid out for the first time this September. It’s reported that more than 30% of school children in the region choose to leave rather than study for extra qualifications.
It’s aimed at pupils entering their first year of Bacherillato and those in the Grado Medio of ‘ciclos formativos’ – vocational training. Teenagers must have reached the age of 16 before 1st January next year and have passed the ‘ESO graduado escolar’ school leaving certificate to be eligible for the new grant. They must also be out of work but not claiming unemployment benefit, and come from a low-income family. Applications can be made during the first fortnight of July, and the money will be paid in 10 monthly payments of 600 € until next June.
The Junta’s education councillor, Mar Moreno, announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the monthly payments will be withdrawn under certain conditions: if the students fail to pass all their subjects, if they leave before completing the course, or if they miss 15% of their monthly classes without a justifiable reason.
The measure is budgeted with 30 million € and is expected to benefit 5,000 pupils in Andalucía in the next school year.
