The ETA activist, José Ignacio de Juana Chaos, has started a campaign to stop his extradition from Belfast to Spain.

Chaos was released from prison after serving 20 years for 25 ETA killings before a change in the penal code would have kept him in prison longer here, and went to Belfast with his wife on his release.

Spain has been trying to get him extradited back home to face new charges of promoting terrorism following his writing of a letter which was read out at a rally held in Spain to celebrate his release from prison.

Now he has organised a petition in Belfast, complete with web page – ‘www.dontextraditethebasques.com’ and he presented the campaign on Wednesday with another Haika militant, Arturo Villanueva. Both the men remain on bail in Belfast while the court there continues to consider their possible extradition.

The campaign looks for signatures ‘demanding the Spanish Government to respect human, civil, political and fundamental rights of the Basque people’. It calls for the British government to ‘immediately reject’ the extradition demands and ‘refuse to collaborate in the political persecution’.
