Unions claims a lack of engineering maintenance cover in the Control Tower at Málaga Airport

Once again the Federation of Independent Aeronautical Unions, FSAI, the union which represents technicians and engineers in the aeronautical industry and air traffic controllers in particular has told Typically Spanish that Málaga airport control tower once again had no engineering cover on Sunday night.

They say this was because the engineer who should have started a shift at 10pm was ill, and the engineer from the previous shift had to end his turn at midnight, the legal limit after 12 hours on duty.

The FSAI says that luck has now become a factor in airport safety, and notes that the Air Traffic Controllers themselves are not technicians. Such lack of cover is becoming ever more common they claim, and indeed it is claimed that two other Spanish airports had similar problems over the weekend, Jerez de la Frontera and Asturias.

A statement from the Spanish Airport Authority, AENA, to the El Mundo newspaper, said ‘the personnel always guaranteed safety levels’.
