Events in Iran dominate some of the papers in Spain today
El País leads on the events in Iran and says that Iran opposition has called for the elections to be annulled in what is a climate of tension. The paper reports that the reformist candidate Musavi has called on his webpage for people to continue their protests while Ahmadineyad has defended the cleanliness of the poll.
The paper shows a photo of Ahmadineyad greeting his supporters in a victory rally held in the centre of Tehran yesterday.
La Vanguardia also leads with the demand from the opposition for the elections to be repeated while the other Barcelona paper, El Periódico, headlines that Iran has cracked down on the protests after the election result.
El Mundo leads with more on Manuel Chaves, the Minister for Territorial Policy who was the President of the Junta de Andalucía and who is alleged to have given favourable treatment to the company where his daughter worked. It says the PP in Andalucía are studying the files from the case today.
Also today the paper moves on to look at another case affecting two of Manuel Chaves’ brothers. Called the Caso Climo Cubierta, it headlines ‘One Chaves tricked the Junta to receive grants from the other Chaves’. El Mundo says the case was closed three years ago but could be reopened.
El País reports that the investigation has shown the PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas as a key piece in the Gürtel corruption case. The paper says there are indications of his alleged link to the evasion of capitals, and that the judge in the case in Madrid is expected to pass it to the Supreme Court today.
ABC headlines that Romanian gangs have chosen Spain because it is ‘a paradise to carry out crime’. 35% of the Romanian delinquents who are acting abroad, do so in Spain, and the Romanian police say they see Spain as ‘the country of opportunities’.
El País says that Government has proposed help of 400 € to those unemployed who are not entitled to benefits. The paper says the payment would be monthly and for a period still to be determined.
El Mundo says that a section of the Government is looking for a way out from the National Court for Judge Baltasar Garzón. The paper says a section of the cabinet has referred to the delicate situation the judge finds himself in, and his lack of popularity among his colleagues in the judiciary.
ABC reports that there will be 50 bilingual institutes in Madrid between 2010 and 2012, and the measure will compliment the new emphasis on English made in schools across the region.
El País reports that those who have been threatened by ETA will be compensated under the new Victims’ Law. The paper says it will apply to those who have suffered labour problems or attacks outside Spain.
El Mundo yesterday interviewed Mariano Rajoy, describing it as his first interview since his victory in the European elections. He told the paper that the PP would save Spain from the ruin to which Zapatero is leading it.
Público today has an interview with the head of the Socialist party in Cataluña, and José Montilla tells them that the PSC exists so that Rajoy will not govern. The paper notes his loyalty to Zapatero despite the current problems agreeing on the new finance deal for the region.
Público devotes its front page to Rodrigo Rato, who was out campaigning for the PP at the Euro elections, but who, according to the paper is to abandon politics (again) and return to his business interests. Described as the ‘economic reference of the PP’ the paper says he now as important roles in 11 companies and that his latest ventures are in the area of real estate management and renewable energy.
Público notes a couple of international stories – and says that the Israeli Prime Minister, Netanyahu, will only accept a Palestinian state with no army.
El País also notes the Netanyahu demand for a demilitarised Palestinian state, and notes that he has rejected the calls for the current settlements to be knocked down.
La Vanguardía has a more positive headline and says that Netanyahu has opened the door to a Palestinian state.
Público also reports on the first European death from Swine flu – in Scotland.
El Mundo is among the papers to give a front page photo to the Spanish basketball player, Pau Gasol, who has become the first Spaniard to play for the winning side in the NBA.
The 5-0 win for Spain against a weak New Zealand in the Confederations Cup gets wide coverage and photos. The hat-trick from Fernando Torres prominent in El Mundo which also reports on what it calls the second revolution from Florentino Pérez who has, says El Mundo, returned Real Madrid to the world elite.
El País describes Spain as a machine following their 5-0 win.
And finally,
El Mundo celebrates the latest internet usage numbers which show it had 21.83 million users during the month of May.
