‘ETA has not had a good weekend’, were the words of Spain’s Interior Minister after the news of the chance discovery of an ETA weapons cache in France this weekend. It came after security forces foiled a jailbreak plan to free three ETA prisoners from prison in Huelva. One of them is Gorka García Sertutxa, who is serving 109 years behind bars for an attempt made on the life of the king in 1995.

The arms cache was discovered in Pindères, in the Lot-et-Garonne area of southern France, by workmen who were re-gravelling a rural road on Saturday. The cache contained 13 firearms with ammunition and 150 blank vehicle registration plates ready for stamping.

The most important discovery however was more than 180 kilos of bomb-making equipment, including chemicals, detonators and cord, and timers. It’s reported as the fifth ETA cache to have been found in France and Spain so far this year.

The terrorists claimed in a statement published in the Basque newspaper ‘Gara’ this weekend responsibility for five bomb attacks in Spain this year, including the attack at the Campo de las Naciones in Madrid. No-one was injured in any of the blasts.

In Huelva meanwhile, it’s been revealed that one of those arrested in the jailbreak operation is a woman in her sixties who’s lived in a poor part of the city her entire life. Público said she’s now been released, but will have to report periodically to the judge as part of her release conditions.
