Major drug smuggling gang arrested in Algeciras

A large-scale drug smuggling operation based in the Bahía de Algeciras has been broken up by officers from the Organised Crime and Drugs Squad, with 11 suspected gang members taken into custody.
They used a fleet of boats and jetskis to smuggle the drugs into Spain, and eight vessels have now been impounded, together with four vehicles and a large amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of drug sales. Officers seized 900 kilos of cannabis.
In another operation in Almería province, the Civil Guard have recovered more than 300 kilos of drugs from a helicopter which an air patrol spotted some 30 miles off the coast of Motril last Friday. It was located on landing in a remote area of Dalías, Almería, where the aircraft was found to be carrying 11 packages of cannabis. The pilot was arrested and an accomplice was later taken into custody. It’s understood the helicopter had been rented in Barcelona city.
