The ten staff from the Zinsa zinc company in Cartagena are demanding a solution to their precarious situation
10 members of staff from the Zinsa company in Cartagena have started a sit-in at Murcia Cathedral and say they will not leave until their demands are met. Staff at the plant are currently under a redundancy dismissal procedure, and Europa Press reports that 90% of the workforce will be without any unemployment benefits next February.
They say they will remain in the Cathedral until a solution is found to allow the company to keep its promise to make the move to new premises planned for Cartagena’s Los Camachos industrial estate, with its workforce. The zinc company’s previous plant in Torreciega was sold to a Murcia development company which it’s reported plans to build 3,000 new homes in the area, but the deal cannot be finalised until Zinsa can raise sufficient funds to decontaminate the site. They are hoping to raise sufficient funds by selling 18 million 1€ shares, although EFE says that has yet to be authorised by the National Stock Market Commission.
Juan Paredes, president of the Zinsa workers’ committee, told an EFE journalist who covered a protest from the 200-strong workforce outside the Murcia parliament on Monday, that the 18 million € would solve the immediate cash flow problems and allow the company to go ahead with building its new plant.
