June 17 is World Desertification Day
The marshlands of the Doñana Nature Park in Huelva are at risk of drying up, as has already been seen in the Tablas de Diamiel, according to a new report from the World Wildlife Fund.
A report from the WWF, published on World Desertification Day June 17, says that overuse of the wells in the area is affecting the water table, and proposes a new minimum ecological flow of water to ensure the survival of streams in the district. They say such provisions are needed to guarantee the future of the marshlands in the medium or long term as climate change is aggravating the situation.
WWF director in Spain, Enrique Segovia, said that the wetlands of the country are in serious danger, and now was the time to change direction.
