Lanzarote Tourist arrivals down over 26 percent in May
larger | smaller
By lanzaroteguidebook.com - Jun 22, 2009 - 1:06 PM
According to figures just released by the Spanish airport authority AENA

The number of foreign tourists visiting Lanzarote dropped by 26.15% in May, as the islands tourism industry continues to feel the impact of the current economic crisis.

Arrivals on flights to Lanzarote dropped from 121,113 visitors in May 2008 to 89,446 last month. Whilst overall figures for the year to date reveal that 118,287 fewer foreign tourists have enjoyed a holiday in Lanzarote during the first five months of this year versus the same period in 2008. A fall of 16.91%.

The British market, Lanzarote´s largest, continues to decline sharply. As the double whammy of the credit crunch and the weak pound encourages many UK consumers to opt for a holiday at home or outside the euro zone. With arrivals from Britain down by 18.76% for the year to date.

The picture is equally gloomy across all other national markets. With visitor numbers from Germany down by 12.73% and from Eire by 14.51%.

The latest AENA figures follow hard on the heels of recent news about a record low in occupancy levels across Lanzarote hotels last month. With ASOLAN, the island hoteliers association, reporting that just 49.1% of all available beds were filled during May versus the same month in 2008.
