Throwaway mobile phone arrives in Spain

Bic became famous for inventing the world’s first throwaway pen, then came the lighters, and now the French company has lent its name to the first disposable mobile. Launched in France last year, the Bic Phone has now arrived in Spain, and will be available from July in tobacconists, newsagents, petrol stations and other points of sale for the price of 29 €.

Made by a sub-contractor of Alcatel, it comes fitted with a charged battery and 12 € of prepaid calls, with the basic functions of making calls, SMS, FM radio and calculator. The network is Orange, who also distributes the phone and receives all the income from its sale. They pay Bic a licensing fee in return for using their brand name, El País said.

More than 100,000 units have been sold in France since its launch there last August and the beginning of May this year.
