Murcia Cathedral - Wikipedia
It’s now more than a week since 10 staff from the Zinsa zinc company in Cartagena started their sit-in at Murcia Cathedral in support of finding a solution for their employment situation. The company planned to move to new premises on Los Camachos industrial estate after selling the previous plant in Torreciega, but have been unable to finalise the deal for lack of funds. They are hoping to raise sufficient money to decontaminate the site by selling 18 million 1€ shares, which would then allow them to complete the deal with the Murcia development company which is buying the site and would also cover the cost of making the move.
Zinsa staff are meanwhile under a redundancy dismissal procedure as they wait for their employers to find a solution. La Verdad reports that more than a hundred of them were at the Cathedral on Monday to show their support to their colleagues who are holding the sit-in, while management waits for an answer from the National Stock Market Commission on authorisation for selling the shares.
The regional councillor for employment, Salvador Marín, has called on Zinsa management to present a viability plan for the company’s future to Murcia’s Development Institute, but there has been no confirmation as yet of when, or if, that will take place.
