A PP councillor has moved over to become a non-aligned councillor, putting the party in a tie position with the Socialists

There’s an uncertain future for the Partido Popular local government in Benidorm, with the announcement by one of the party’s councillors this Wednesday that he is moving over from the PP grouping on the council to become a ‘non-affiliated’ councillor.

The decision by José Bañuls loses the party its council majority and puts them in a tie position with PSOE, with both the PP and the Socialists now having 12 seats each in the corporation and Bañuls, as the 25th councillor, having the deciding vote.

The announcement was followed by speculation in the press of a possible motion of censure against the current local government. Bañuls said his decision was not based on such a possibility, which the Socialist spokesman, Agustín Navarro, also said his party sees as something in the distant future.

Bañuls however commented to Diario Información that he will support everything that is beneficial to the town, ‘from whomever it may come’.
