The deal updates an agreement made in 1997
Spain and Morocco has signed new agreements which increase collaboration in anti-terrorism measures, and which consider the concept of ‘political crimes’ for the first time. The new category will be used when crimes cannot be considered directly as terrorist crimes.
The Spanish Justice Minister, Francisco Caamaño, signed the agreement in Rabat, describing it as ‘very important news’ for both countries and a renovation of their bilateral relations in existence since 1997.
Now the two countries will be able to share information on bank accounts and assets, and judges from both countries will be able to work together in the fight against organised crime. However Spain will continue to deny extradition to anyone who faces the death penalty or life imprisonment in Morocco.
Meanwhile a Spanish fishing boat ‘Nuevo Francisco Javier’ has been intercepted overnight by the Moroccan Coastal Guard when fishing a few miles off the Moroccan coast. The boat has a crew of seven, five from the Canaries and two from Morocco.
A statement from the Canary Island Government has said that they hope for a quick solution as the incident has no doubt been caused by an error, and that the boat can return to the Canaries later.
