29,000 bathers were stung in the province last year
As high temperatures arrive on the Spanish costas, in Alicante and Murcia a team of 200 volunteer look outs have started to keep an eye out for jellyfish.
Experts say that the numbers are up in line with higher sea temperatures in the Mediterranean and so far some 48 bathers in the San Juan and Postiguet area have been treated for stings. Last year more than 29,000 bathers were attended to for stings in Alicante province. Similar numbers are expected this year as the sea temperature is forecast to rise as high as 30 degrees.
The volunteers are fishermen, lifeguards or members of nautical clubs in the province and will report when they see any of the invertebrates. Then boats from fishing brotherhoods from La Vila, Santa Pola, Benidorm, Calpe and Alicante will move in to remove them from the water.
