The Gúrtel case is back in the news with Luis Bárcenas being investigated in the Supreme Court

El Mundo leads with the headline that the Supreme Court has opened the case against the national treasurer of the Partido Popular. The court will investigate Luis Bárcenas, and also the PP deputy Jesús Merino for bribery and fiscal fraud, but not for money laundering.
The paper says that against the request of the prosecutors’ office they have returned the rest of the Gürtel case to the Madrid High Court.
El Mundo says that the prosecutor has rejected the version of events given to the instruction judge by the business man at the centre of the case, Francisco Correa.
ABC tucks away the headline – The Supreme Court will judge Bárcenas for alleged fraud and bribery.

El Mundo has a front page photo from a demonstration held in Madrid yesterday by workers from the Garoña nuclear power station. With the caption, ‘Garoña workers against Zapatero’, the photo shows the demonstrators holding up signs which read ‘Zapatero, 1000 more families to the dole?’

El Mundo says that the Government has given in, and the veto from the regions against the cross area merger of savings banks will remain in place.
ABC says that the Bank of Spain will have to fight with the regions in order to get savings banks mergers. The paper says the Government intends to approve its road map for the restructuring of the banking system tomorrow, while the PP wants the managers of the entities to receive state aid to assume their responsibilities.

El País reports that the OECD has improved its forecasts for the United States but worsens the prediction for Spain. The paper also notes a record injection of cash by the European Central Bank so that banks can continue to offer credits.

El País says that Zapatero will announce tax increases to eliminate the deficit in 2012. The paper says that talks on the budgets will restart in the autumn, and his plan is to hit the high earners. The PP meanwhile is demanding a cut in spending and lower fiscal pressure.

ABC leads with the headline that the crisis has caused a jump in the number of requests for help from charities from people who can’t survive. Cáritas received 600,000 requests for help in 2008, the highest number in the last 40 years.
La Vanguardia leads with the headline that the crisis has dramatically increased the number of poor, and is affecting the rich.

El Periódico headlines that car sales in Spain have increased after 31 months of falls. It’s thanks to the Government’s incentives.

El Mundo, which has been presenting revelations against the head of the Spanish Secret Service, CNI, Alberto Saiz, for some days, reports today, a day after he appeared to give explanations in Congress, that the Minister for Defence, Carme Chacón, has ordered an investigation into his conduct.
El País notes that the CNI are to abandon their ‘key antenna’ in Tetuán, because of pressure from Rabat.

El Mundo highlights a 300 € fine placed against the National Court judge Baltasar Garzón for allowing a Turkish drug trafficker to be released. The judge is normal target in the paper, and they think the fine issued against him is a joke.

Few international stories this morning.
El País says that the Iranian regime has closed the door to an agreement with the reformers.

And finally,
Plenty of coverage as you might expect for the defeat of Spain by the United States.
El Mundo says it was unheard of, and that the United States ended Spain’s dream.
El País has a photo of goalie Iker Casillas, and says that two years on, 35 games later, Spain has lost again. It says the United States managed to defeat a team which seemed invincible and now misses the final of the Confederations Cup.
ABC has the caption ‘Failure made in the USA’. Again the paper shows Iker Casillas after he let in one of the goals.
