The Ministry for Health has authorised the first two face transplants in Spain. The procedures will be carried out in the La Fe Hospital in Valencia and in the Virgen del Rocío in Sevilla, where both facilities are reported to have candidate patients.
The National Transplant Organisation, which is dependant on the Ministry for Health, has looked at both cases and now issued a positive report which guarantees the quality and safety of the process. They consider it will be an extraordinary advance in quality of life for the patients.
Minister for Health, Trinidad Jiménez, expressed her satisfaction at the decision which she said was ‘a very important step in medical research’ in Spain.
So far worldwide only seven such transplants have been carried out.
