Juan M. killed the family dog to intimidate his wife before setting fire to the home
A 42 year old Elche man, Juan M., who killed the family dog to intimidate his wife has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a court in Alicante. The man was found guilty of hitting his wife, setting fire to her house and threatening to kill her.
The court considered that the death of the dog was ‘cruel and heartless’ and intended to intimidate her to demand 24,000 € from her family. The court heard how he stamped on the dog’s head until it was dead.
The court also ordered that the man could not work or trade with animals for a year, but most of the sentence comes as a result of his attempt to set fire to the home on the day following the attack on the animal in Callosa de Segura on Jan 6 2007. The woman managed to escape the attack and hide with friends.
The Domestic Violence helpline number is 016.
