Despite the fact that the Fuente de Piedra lagoon in Málaga province is practically dry this year, some 6,000 pink flamingo chicks and 3,492 adults remain at the site, concentrated in the only area where water remains, in the Arroyo Charcón.

With the chicks hatched, and now about six weeks old, the birds will have to stay in the lagoon for another six weeks or so, until they are old enough to fly at about three months old. Meanwhile now the parents, some 12,000 adults in total, are busy flying to other locations in a 200 kilometre radius to obtain food.

Most of the Fuente de Piedra lagoon, which this year celebrates 25 years since it was declared a nature reserve, now shows a mirror of crystalline salt, but despite that preparations are underway for what is one of the largest environmental events in Europe on July 18, when dozens of volunteers descend on the lagoon to take part in the ringing of the new chicks. A new visitors centre will be open by then.
