11 Zoos across the country have been criticised

The European Union has complained about what it says is the lacking procedures at 11 zoos in Spain, which they say do not comply with EU norms which demand animal conservation, the education and safety of the public, and the wellbeing for the animals.

The European Commission already opened a file on the case in 2007.
Non-governmental organisation Eurogroup, voiced their satisfaction at the news and claimed that many zoos carry out no protection of the animals. Spokesperson, Sonja Van Tichelen, said that finally three years of complaints to the EU had arrived at the courts. She said the threat of a fine from Europe will force the Spanish authorities to treat zoo animals differently. She particularly criticised how elephants, bears and lions were kept, with space restrictions or cages which deeply affect the animals and give the visitors a distorted image of wild animals.

Zoos in the Spanish regions of Asturias, Aragón, Baleares, Cantabria, Canarias, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León,Extremadura, Galicia, Murcia and la Comunidad Valenciana are affected.
