The decision of the European Court of Human Rights against Batasuna leads the Spanish papers today
Making Batasuna illegal was an ‘absolute social need’. That is the headline in El Mundo, and comes following the decision of the European Court of Human Rights to unanimously reject the appeal from ETA’s political wing against their prohibition.
The paper quotes the Spanish Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba who said ‘In our country never more will there be parties which defend violence in our institutions’.
Público dedicates its front page to the story and says that Batasuna has lost its last base, as the European Court for Human Rights has ruled that the dissolution of the group was ‘an absolute social need’. The unanimous sentence says that Batasuna worked as ‘an instrument of the terrorist strategy of ETA’.
El País headlines that Strasbourg has backed the ‘social need’ for Batasuna to be illegal, describing it as an historic sentence.
ABC says that Europe has certified the definitive illegality of the pro-ETA groups. The European Court of Human Rights has said the Supreme Court was right in making Batasuna illegal.
El Mundo reports that the Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, has called on the EU to call their ambassadors for consultations in Honduras. Both El Mundo and El País note that Micheletti has threatened to arrest the deposed President, Manuel Zelaya, if he returns to the country.
Público says that Zelaya is to return, despite the threats, and has an exclusive interview with him. He says that Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has shown him all his support.
El Mundo reports that Michael Jackson excluded both his father and his brothers in his will.
El Mundo carries the story of the 14 year old girl who has turned out to be the only survivor of a plane crash near the Comoros Islands.
Público notes that 152 lost their lives on the Airbus.
ABC says another Airbus has crashed into the sea during a storm.
El País notes the train crash in Italy where 14 people were killed when a train carrying liquid gas collided with another. El País says that a train tells hell to the north of Italy.
El Mundo reports that the Catalan President, José Montilla, has been meeting with the savings banks in the region to promote mergers in the sector.
La Vanguardia notes that the Bank of Spain will help with the merger of the Catalan Savings Banks.
Público notes that house prices in Spain have fallen more sharply than before.
El País says that house prices have fallen by more than 10% in the last year in four regions, Cataluña, Madrid, Basque Country and Navarra. The paper says there has been no soft landing or moderate fall.
El Mundo tells is that the pregnancy complicated the symptoms for the 20 year old Moroccan woman who on Tuesday became Spain’s first Swine Flu fatality.
El País notes that the woman, Dalila, was sent home from hospital emergency department three times before being admitted. It quotes her husband saying that she was sent home despite not even being able to walk.
The paper notes she gave birth by caesarian section the day before she died.
ABC reports that there are three critical cases in addition in hospitals now.
Público reports that bishops in the Basque country have asked for forgiveness for the church’s behavior during the Franco years.
El Mundo says that a 7 year old boy has drowned in a swimming pool while he father was asleep. The two were with a four year old sister in a sports centre in Aranjuez which they had broken into.
In Sport, the arrival of Kaká in his number 8 shirt at Real Madrid gets wide coverage.
El Mundo has a front page photo and says the Brazilian received a tremendous welcome, with more than 40,000 fans in the Santiago Bernabéu.
ABC puts the story with photo on the front page and says that the new galactic era has started.
Público notes that the Pirate Bay torrent site has been sold for six million €. Reports indicate that the new owners are to make the operation legal.
El País manages to get a photo from the opening concert from U2 in Barcelona last night. The paper notes the 360º stage and that it was the first gig on their international tour of 44 concerts.
La Vanguardia has a front page photo and says ‘U2 – from Barcelona to the world’.
And finally,
El Mundo notes that the man who is the Spanish equivalent of the Speaker, José Bono, has given the order that the ushers prevent anyone in ‘indecorous’ clothing from entering Congress.
