The union concerned cites alleged deficiencies in engineering cover at control towers

The Federation of Independent Aeronautical Unions, the FSAI, has made a formal complaint to the AESA Spanish Air Safety Agency over their concerns at a lack of sufficient engineering cover at airport control towers in Spain. The FSAI had previously highlighted concerns at the situation at Málaga Airport, where a shortage of specialised technicians recently left the control tower without engineering cover on one occasion and, on another, led to one technician working 17 hours without a break.

ATSEP technicians and engineers – air traffic safety electronics personnel - are responsible for supervising and maintaining the technical systems used in airport control towers for air navigation services.

The union says in its denuncia that leaving air traffic control without ATSEP cover contravenes legislation and could constitute a risk to operational safety at the airports affected. They claim the Development Ministry, which has responsibility for the sector, has failed to take any measures to address the situation.
