A British couple face up to 15 years in prison for the death of a teenager from Alfaz del Pi who died in a horrific moped accident in March last year. 17 year old José Antonio Caro Buendía died after he was thrown from his moped after colliding with a first vehicle, and was then hit by another which dragged him along the road for 2 kms before fleeing the scene.

The second vehicle was traced to 57 year old David Walter Cook and 46 year old Angela Maureen Green, a British couple resident in Polop who were then arrested in connection with the teenager’s death. Their trial began at the Alicante provincial court this Wednesday, where the lawyer acting on behalf of the youngster’s family accused the couple of stopping on an isolated road to manoeuvre the car to free José Antonio’s trapped body from beneath the vehicle and dumping it there before driving off. He was still alive at the time, but died shortly afterwards.

The family’s lawyer, José Luis Benedicto, told journalists on Wednesday that the autopsy revealed a horrifying death, what he described as the ‘worst agony’. He and the family believe the accused were aware that it was a person trapped beneath their vehicle and have asked for the maximum sentence possible.

A witness in another car told the court on Wednesday that she saw the vehicle run over the youngster and then drag him along, while another spoke of following the trail of blood down a quiet lane and seeing tracks which indicated a vehicle had carried out manoeuvres back and forth, supposedly to free the body trapped underneath.

David Cook and Angela Green declined to declare to the court on Wednesday. The case continues Thursday with expert testimony which will try to explain the chain of events.
