ABC today
Unity against ETA and the new Catalan education law dominate many of the front pagesPúblico leads today with what it says was a key meeting between Zapatero and López in the Moncloa yesterday.
The Spanish Prime Minister and the Socialist leader of the Basque Government are planning a special appearance to launch a new political era in the Basque region. At the heart of it all is unity against ETA.
El País considers that the Prime Minister sees ‘complicity’ against ETA in his relationship with Patxi López.
ABC reports that the Batasuna activist Arnaldo Otegi, has admitted that the ruling from Strasbourg which supports their declaration as being an illegal organisation is ‘a catastrophe’ for ETA supporters.
Público notes that an ultimatum has been given to those who carried out the coup in Honduras. They have 72 hours from the OEA, the Organisation of American States, to put Zelaya back in place. It comes as the EU countries have withdrawn their ambassadors from the country.
The paper notes however that the rebels say they will not talk, and they will arrest Zelaya if he returns to Tegucigalpa.
El País reports on the ultimatum and say that Spain, Italy and France have led the way in bringing their ambassadors home.
El País has a front page photo of the 13 year old girl who is the only survivor of the 153 who were onboard the Yemeni Airbus which crashed on Tuesday. The paper says her survival was a miracle given that she can hardly swim. She was found after she had hung on to a piece of the fuselage for 12 hours.
ABC has a photo of the very young looking widower of Dalila, the 20 year old Moroccan woman who died in Madrid this week from the A(H1N1) virus, the first fatality in Spain.
The paper says Mohamed has threatened to take legal action against the doctors who treated her, and a photo shows him packing for his journey to Tangiers where he will bury her today. He says he would like her mother to be given residency papers in Spain.
El Mundo says the worst part of the flu will arrive with the autumn.
Público leak that the Government will today announce an extension to the service time for the Garoña nuclear plant in Burgos.
ABC says that the Government tried to win over the opposition for the closure of the plant yesterday, with a meeting between closed doors.
El País says the government intends to convert the plant into a parador hotel in the future.
El Mundo has a couple of photos of a meeting between the President of the Catalan Generalitat, José Montilla, with the CiU President Artur Mas, and considers that linguistic secession is on the way in the region with the new Catalan education law. The paper considers there is unity between Catalan Socialists and the nationalists.
ABC leads with the story and says the alliance between the PSC and the CiU will banish Castellano from the classrooms of Cataluña. The paper says the Catalan parliament yesterday approved the regional education law which abolishes the third hour of Spanish a week.
La Vanguardia says that Cataluña has given the education law wide support, and El Periódico headlines that Cataluña has started the grand reform of schools.
El Mundo reports that 40% of tax payers claimed to earn less than 857 € a month last year. The number is slightly misleading as it refers to 14 months. It works out to 12,000 € a year.
Público notes that the Euribor has fallen below 1.5% in its daily rate for the first time in its ten year history.
El País notes that car sales have recovered thanks to the direct help put in place by central and regional governments. Private sales were up 14,5% in June after 31 months of falls, but are still 38% lower over the first half of the year.
El Mundo notes the new rules which will allow United States officials to control travelers to the states before they board planes at Barajas in Madrid.
El País looks at how the recession has affected the live music industry in Spain this summer, and notes the reduced number of festivals because of budgetary problems. The call it the sad song of the summer, but it will be sung this year by artists such as Amaral, La Oreja de Van Gogh and El Canto del Loco.
And finally,
El Mundo considers that with Benzema now signed as a striker for Real Madrid, the way is clear for Valencia’s David Villa to sign for Barcelona.
El País decribes Benzema as ‘another Ronaldo’ and notes the 35 million € price tag.
