There were reported to be eight babies on board this latest boat
A heavily-laden open-topped boat carrying almost 60 illegal immigrants was located in the Strait of Gibraltar this Thursday morning after those on board contacted Spanish emergency services to ask for help. They were rescued two hours after the call was made saying they were adrift in the Strait.
The occupants are reported to be from Sub-Saharan Africa, with eight babies and 17 women amongst the passengers. A 7-months pregnant woman was checked over by doctors in a health centre as a precaution.
A ninth body has meanwhile been recovered from the immigrant boat which capsized off the coast of Barbate on Monday. The body of a young adult male was located on the Playa de las Plumas on Thursday morning, near the Trafalgar lighthouse. Only 15 people have so far been rescued alive, 3 of whom face charges of negligent homicide.
