The investigation began after the first forged notes were detected in Spain in 2007

The European Union’s largest euro forgery network has been smashed in Bulgaria in a joint operation by Bulgarian police and National Police officers from Spain. The investigation began after the first forged notes were discovered in Spain in 2007, and it’s now been revealed that the team has arrested 17 people and seized half a million € of high-quality fake notes.

Officers located three print workshops in the Bulgarian town of Plovdiv, which were set up to print fake 100, 200 and 500 € notes. 24 property searches took place in Bulgaria, with computers and software also seized as part of the police operation, along with the forging equipment.

Police say the forgery network was one of the most active in Europe and had been under investigation by several European countries for a number of years. It’s understood an international team of detectives coordinated by Europol and Eurojust was set up for the purposes of the investigation.
