It came as much of eastern Spain was on alert for high temperatures
A massive hail storm damaged hundreds of vehicles in the western part of the Basque capital, Vitoria, on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by a sudden 20 degree drop in temperature. There was flooding in the streets as traffic came to a standstill, and the city’s Mayor, Patxi Lazcoz, said hundreds of families were affected. Público reports 16 litres of hail per square metre.
The Mayor announced the following day that he will apply to the Tax Ministry for the city to be declared a catastrophic area.
Elsewhere in Spain, the high temperatures are set to continue for the rest of the week, with much of the eastern part of the country on yellow alert. The orange alert continues in Jaén, where temperatures have reached 40 degrees this week.
