The Málaga Socialist Party are unhappy about a programme shown on Spanish national television on Wednesday night, during prime time viewing on TVE1. Entitled ‘desmontar el chiringuito’ – ‘dismantle the chiringuito’, the party says it gave a false impression of the outlook for Spain’s beach restaurants, when agreement has been reached with the government to allow them to remain on the sand.

PSOE’s general secretary for Málaga province, Miguel Ángel Heredia, told EFE the programme suggested the chiringuitos could have their days numbered because of the Ley de Costas coastal law. The law states the beach to be public land, which would mean the chiringuitos would have to move off the beach. But the Environment Ministry’s General Secretary for the Sea, Juan Carlos Martín Fragueiro, said just a few weeks ago in Málaga that the restaurants can stay on the sand without any disciplinary action being taken. Heredia also noted a comment from the Minister, Elena Espinosa, that her department has never intended to remove the chiringuitos from Spain’s beaches, but instead has aimed to find a balance between the restaurants’ business and respect for the environment.

And in Andalucía, Heredia said a committee with representatives from chiringuito owners and three levels of public administration was set up at the end of last month to discuss ways of giving the beach restaurants protection under the law.

He has asked TVE to publicly rectify the content of their programme.
