The corruption in Marbella Town Hall has resulted in the largest ever court proceedings of their type in Spain

The Malaya case, investigating the widespread corruption based in Marbella Town Hall during the years that Jesús Gil was Mayor of the town, and in the years following, will finally reach court in Málaga in March, according to newspaper La Opinión de Málaga.

103 people have been accused so far in the proceedings which will be held in the new Palace of Justice in Málaga where a special hall is being prepared to cope with such large numbers.

Construction work is to start in August, taking advantage of lower numbers of public in the building, and will take some two months. Some of those accused have now been issued with dates to attend by security forces in Madrid, Málaga and Marbella. Letters were also sent on Thursday from the Provincial Court to the National Police, Civil Guard and local police forces in Madrid, Málaga and Marbella, requesting their collaboration in the hearings.

The Malaya case is the largest corruption case ever to come to court in Spain.
A question mark remains over the current judge who has been instructing the case, Óscar Pérez Corrales, following his request for a transfer made earlier this week. He claims he is exhausted.

The March date comes because the man at the centre of the allegations, the ex Real Estate Assessor in Marbella Town Hall, Juan Antonio Roca, will have been held on remand in prison for four years come April 1.

Although he has already been found guilty in the separate ‘Saqueo 1’ case, that verdict is not yet firm, and so there was a possibility of his release.

Meanwhile as Roca remains in prison on remand, just to add to his problems, Marbella Town Hall has now issued him with a letter threatening disciplinary action for ‘an unjustified lack of attendance’ to his job. Diario Sur reports the Ayuntamiento have said it’s part of the process needed to end the work contract that Roca has with them.
